I recently obtained a 12in PowerBook G4 and I was impressed by its speed and ease of use, and that is despite the fact it is running “Panther” on a PowerPC CPU and not the spiffy new Intels. In my opinion it is a nice little laptop that would be a good contender for a netbook if it didn’t weight as much as my 15.4 inch dell. But nevertheless is was a sturdy easy to use computer, until about 4 hours ago, at which point the harddrive made a lovely buzzing noise and proceeded to fudge up a bit. The entire system sagged and continued to run but with a much higher heat output. I find it ironic that a sturdy little guy like this can survive 5 years of heavy use without so much as a hiccup of a problem, but as soon as it changes hands the harddrive hits the proverbial fan! So now I have two options: one, return it to its previous owner and continue on my bleak existence with not a Mac in arms reach; or two, tear it down and replace the harddrive in a machine that, not only have I never disassembled before, but I have even disassembled any of its relatives. So we shall see how it pans out in the end, and I’m sure screenshots will follow option two, but until then I bid you ado.
